Things Arabs Should Look for in Universities Abroad

Being an Arab and living abroad can be hard sometimes, so it’s important to find the perfect university to suit you. This usually means that it has to be located in an area that has the right vibe for you.

I know that all Arabs aren’t alike, but there are certain things that many of us are used to and wouldn’t be able to give up.

Firstly, the city is important

You still want that Arab feel for whenever you’re feeling nostalgic

Even if you hate the city you live in, no matter where you go, you’re going to miss home, so make sure there’s a few good shisha and shawerma places where you can get that Arab touch.

Try not to find a place with a high currency (basically the UK)

pound

Trust me, living in an area where everything is worth ten times the amount is not fun, especially if you’re a smoker. Don’t be surprised if you have to start rolling cigarettes to save money… and yes people do it, it’s a thing.

You’re going to need that urban lifestyle close to you

urban

Moving from an area like Cairo to the countryside in God knows what area is going to be a tough change to go through. You’re going to need to live in a city or near one; the sound of traffic might be annoying, but you will definitely miss it.

Secondly, the people

They can’t be too down to earth

Let’s be honest, no matter how down to earth you think you are, it doesn’t compare to the people who live abroad. All of those maids and drivers you’re used to are not part of the typical lifestyle abroad, so don’t be surprised when people don’t “feel you” when you’re missing your maid Samah or your bawab 3atef.

You need at least three other Arab friends

Most of us don’t realise how quickly we lose our Arabic. It happens and you need to make sure you have a few friends to be speaking to in Arabic frequently because if your dad is the only person, then you have a problem.

Find other foreign friends

The perks of having foreign friends mean that you can travel to other countries and have a place to stay. It doesn’t sound that important when you could always stay at a hotel, but on a uni budget, that isn’t a realistic option most of the time.

Find a friend with a car

It’s very likely that you won’t have a car during your first year, so make sure you find someone who does, because McDonald’s doesn’t deliver abroad and it’s a problem.
