In Pictures: Raymond Depardon Captures the Peace and Illusion of Beirut’s 1975 Civil War

By Amena Reda

Starting from 1975 until 1990, Lebanon suffered from a progressing civil war and an external one with Israel. The war was tragic, affecting everything from the Lebanese economy, its wonderful crowded souks, and nightlife, to its pure and colorful spirit, not to mention the material and human losses.

The Lebanese people spent a lifetime trying to regain their inner peace and the country’s political and economic strength. They worked on developing the different dimensions of their society until they reached a stable position.

However, Lebanon’s struggle did not end there. Since October 2019, Lebanon has been seeing nationwide protests hoping to change the future of the country. A horrific and unexpected explosion hit Beirut’s port last week, causing extensive damage throughout the capital, and today, the resignation of the government! Do you think history is repeating itself?

Scroll down to have a look at the 1978 civil war through Raymond Depardon’s photography that managed to give us all major flashbacks.

WE SAID THIS: Do you think this is another turning point in Lebanese history?
