In Pictures: The Geminid Meteor Shower Adorns the UAE’s Night Sky

In the UAE, residents prepared their camping and photography equipment and headed to Wadi Shawkah in Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) to witness the spectacular Geminid Meteor shower which lit up the night sky between Sunday evening and pre-dawn on Monday. At around 2 am (Gulf time), the night sky was showered with more than 60 to 120 meteors per hour. The Geminids are beautiful because they’re fast, bright, and make for a dazzling night sky. And with the calm wintry weather, stargazers enjoyed a magical experience in the desert.

The Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG) stated that the name of the shower comes from the constellation Gemini where the meteors seem to emerge. According to several records, the Geminid meteor shower is approximately 200 years old, where the first recorded observation was in 1833 from the Mississippi River.
