If you’ve spent any time on TikTok lately, you’ve probably come across the term looksmaxxing. The trend is all about maximizing your appearance—whether that’s through skincare, hairstyles, makeup, fashion, or fitness—to become the best-looking version of yourself. While today’s version often revolves around concepts like “hunter eyes,” facial harmony, and jawlines, the idea itself isn’t exactly new.

Long before social media turned beauty into a checklist, Arab pop stars and actresses of the early 2000s were setting beauty trends that everyone wanted to copy. From salon blowouts to pencil-thin brows, these women had entire generations walking into hair salons with magazine cutouts in hand.

Here are five early 2000s beauty trends that defined Arab “looksmaxxing.”

The Salon Blowout

The blueprint: Elissa

If there was one hairstyle that screamed early 2000s glamour, it was the big salon blowout.

Elissa made glossy, voluminous hair part of her signature look. Think soft layers, plenty of body at the roots, and perfectly curled ends that looked like you’d just left the salon. It was polished without looking stiff, and it became one of the most requested hairstyles across the region.

Back then, sleek bun simply wasn’t the goal—volume was.

Pencil-Thin Brows

The blueprint: Nicole Saba

Before fluffy brows and brow laminations took over, the beauty standard was almost the complete opposite.

Nicole Saba perfectly embodied the era’s ultra-thin, carefully shaped eyebrows. Women plucked their brows into narrow arches that framed smoky eye makeup and created a sleek, sculpted look. It was one of the defining beauty trends of the late ’90s and early 2000s, though many people have since joked about spending years trying to grow them back.

Bold, Smoky Eyes & Nude Lips

The blueprint: Haifa Wehbe

If early 2000s Arab glamour had a signature makeup look, it was dramatic eyes and nude lips.

Haifa Wehbe popularized heavily lined eyes, black kohl, smoky shadow, and layers of mascara. Nude lips often balanced the look, making the eyes the undeniable focal point. Whether it was a music video, photoshoot, or red carpet appearance, bold eye makeup became synonymous with full-on glam.

Chunky Highlights

The blueprint: Yasmine Abdel Aziz

Long before subtle balayage became the norm, chunky highlights ruled salons.

Yasmine Abdel Aziz was often seen with thick caramel and honey-blonde streaks woven through brown hair—a trend inspired by international pop culture but hugely popular across the Arab world. Rather than blending seamlessly, these highlights were meant to stand out, adding contrast and dimension that instantly gave hair a brighter, trendier look.

The Razor-Cut Fringe

The blueprint: Ruby

Ruby made straight, layered hair with wispy, razor-cut bangs one of the defining hairstyles of the early 2000s. Unlike today’s curtain bangs, these fringes were intentionally textured and slightly piece-y, creating that effortlessly cool, Y2K look that showed up everywhere from music videos to salon inspiration photos.

Beauty Trends Come and Go, but the Goal Stays the Same

Today’s version of looksmaxxing may revolve around skincare routines, facial symmetry, and viral TikTok advice, but the idea of maximizing your appearance has always existed.

In the early 2000s, the formula just looked different. It was salon blowouts instead of heatless curls, pencil-thin brows instead of laminated ones, chunky highlights instead of balayage, and smoky eyes instead of “clean girl” makeup.

The trends have changed, but one thing hasn’t: every generation has had its own beauty icons—and in the early 2000s Arab world, these divas were the ones everyone was trying to look like.

Aside from her love for words, humans generally fascinate her. She spends a lot of her time analyzing the minds of people around her and watching criminal minds. She is still fairly new in adulthood, and until now, nothing has made sense in life but chocolate.
