At just 19 years old, Emirati mountaineer Fatima Abdulrahman Al Awadhi has reached a new milestone for both herself and the UAE. She has become the youngest Arab to climb above 7,000 metres and the first Emirati to summit Lenin Peak (7,134 metres) in the Pamir Mountains of Kyrgyzstan.
The historic expedition was completed under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, adding another remarkable achievement to the country’s growing presence in international mountaineering.
Taking On One of Central Asia’s Toughest Peaks
Lenin Peak is considered one of the most challenging high-altitude mountains in Central Asia. Standing at 7,134 metres, it is known for its unpredictable weather, vast glaciers, and the physical demands of spending long periods above 7,000 metres.
Fatima’s expedition lasted around three weeks and was divided into two stages. The first focused on acclimatization, allowing her body to adjust to the extreme altitude before beginning the final summit push. Impressively, she completed the climb without using supplementary oxygen, making the achievement even more demanding.
A Heartfelt Message After Reaching the Summit
Following the climb, Al Awadhi shared an emotional message on Instagram, thanking His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for his support throughout her journey.
I climb with a heart full of gratitude. Support like this is rare, and it makes me incredibly proud to call the UAE home, proud to be Emirati, and proud to raise our flag above 7,000 meters.
Her words reflected not only the significance of the climb but also the pride of representing the UAE on one of the world’s highest peaks.
A Fast-Rising Mountaineering Career
Lenin Peak now stands as Fatima’s highest summit to date, an incredible achievement considering she only began tackling major mountaineering expeditions a year ago with Mount Elbrus (5,642 metres), the highest mountain in Europe.
Since then, she has built an impressive list of accomplishments. She is the youngest Emirati to summit Mount Elbrus and the youngest Arab to climb both Vinson Massif in Antarctica and Carstensz Pyramid in Oceania. She has also successfully reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain.
One Step Closer to the Seven Summits
The successful ascent of Lenin Peak marks a major step in Fatima’s long-term goal of completing the Seven Summits and the Explorer’s Grand Slam, two of the world’s most prestigious mountaineering challenges.
With four of the Seven Summits already completed, the young Emirati continues to establish herself as one of the region’s most promising mountaineers while inspiring a new generation of adventurers across the Arab world.
