The Man Behind Bar D’O – Cairo’s Newest Bar

0

A new bar has newly opened about 3 weeks ago, but let me say this is not just another bar in the streets of Cairo. It’s the “Character” as I quote from Khaled Sabry, the owner that makes Bar D’O stand out. The amazingly unique setting reminds one of the mellow New York ‘meat district’ or London’s Chelsea basements…

1)     Why did you decide to open in Zamalek?

For this one, we had to work backwards. We felt that Cairo was asking for a spot for those late afternoon drinks and Zamalek was the perfect place for this. People all over the world go straight for drinks after work. And that was the starting point. We then built the concept around a raw/natural feel with minimum statement features. The upshot: bare-brick walls, exposed ventilation, wooden appetizer platters and jar cocktails. Bar D’O gets its hunch from the townhouses and browstone historic buildings of Brooklyn, New York.

2)     What kind of music is usually played? Are there specific themes that the bar often sticks to?

When we first sat down to set the tone in Bar D’O, the idea was to steer clear of any “club-bangers.” The music is a pleasant choice over the typical soundtrack suspects around town. So, a lot of mellow remixes and jazzy tunes. We actually have different playlists for every 2 hour intervals to make sure the music sets the mood and not the other way around.

3)     What kind of food and drinks is offered at Bar D’O?

We offer skewers of assorted grills and delicious platters of exotic cheeses and cold cuts. Add to those appetizer dips of fresh cooked prawns and other light snacks. I personally recommend the melted camembert dish with rosemary (Make sure you eat it while it’s still hot).

4)     Any special events coming up in the summer?

We would like to stay true to the reviews and warm welcome Cairo gave us and maintain Bar D’O as an everyday spot. So this won’t be your spot for weekly events although I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a select series of Upper East Side style get-togethers.

We Said This: Bar D’O Your Neighborhood bar, Where everyone knows your name!
