As Egypt get ready for a massive Round of 16 showdown against Argentina next Tuesday in Atlanta, one question keeps popping up:
Have these two teams actually played each other before?
The answer is yes.
That meeting came back in March 2008, when Argentina visited Cairo for an international friendly. It wasn’t the result Egypt wanted, with Argentina coming away 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Sergio Agüero and Nicolás Burdisso.
One fun fact? Lionel Messi didn’t even play that night, as he missed the match through injury.

A Lot Has Changed Since Then
That game feels like a lifetime ago.
Egypt were led by Hassan Shehata and had some of the biggest names of the country’s golden generation on the pitch, including Essam El Hadary, Wael Gomaa and Mohammed Aboutrika.
It was a friendly. There was pride on the line, of course, but nothing close to what’s at stake now.

This Time, It’s Win or Go Home
Fast forward 18 years, and the stage couldn’t be bigger.
Egypt are through to the World Cup Round of 16 on penalties win over Australia. Argentina also needed extra time to get past Cape Verde in a dramatic 3-2 victory.
Now, they’ll meet with a place in the quarter-finals on the line.
No second chances. Just 90 minutes—or maybe more—to decide who keeps dreaming.

Maybe It’s Time to Change the Story
The record books say Argentina have won the only meeting between the two nations.
But every rivalry has to start somewhere, and every statistic is made to be broken.
For Egypt, Tuesday is a chance to do exactly that.
Instead of looking back at what happened in Cairo in 2008, Pharaohs fans will be hoping we’re talking about what happened in Atlanta in 2026—the night Egypt finally got one over Argentina and booked a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Wouldn’t that be a story worth telling?
