Replica of Palmyra’s Arch of Triumph Unveiled in London

In an attempt to save history, a replica of Palmyra’s arch, destroyed by Islamic state group jihadists, was unveiled in London’s Trafalgar square this Tuesday. The almost six-meter-tall model is made of Egyptian marble by the Institute of Digital Archaeology, and carved in the northern Italian region of Tuscany.

The model was constructed using 3D technology, based on photos of the original monument built by Romans. Maamoun Abdul Karim, Syria’s Director if Antiques, explained, “It is a message of raising awareness in the world”, adding that “We have common heritage. Our heritage is universal – it is not just for Syrian people”.

The replica will travel to cities around the world, as New York city and Dubai, after staying in London for three days. The plan is for the arch to find a permanent residence next to the originally destroyed one.
