Citing Its Failing of Gaza: Famous Novelist Ends Contracts With German S. Fischer
Bosnian novelist Lana Bastašić, famous for her novel Catch the Rabbit, posted on her Instagram account Yesterday, January 15th, the termination of her contracts with the German publishing house S. Fischer over their silence on Gaza.
The novelist cited S. Fisher’s failure to “be vocal about the ongoing genocide happening in Gaza,” in addition to censoring pro-Palestinian voices. According to her, the termination came as a “moral and ethical duty.”
The spokesperson of the publishing company commented on the news of Bastašić’s termination, saying, “We respect her decision and are in constructive talks with her agency.”
This comes amid calls to boycott Germany after it sided with Israel in the ICJ case filed by South Africa, where Germany saw the accusation of genocide was invalid under the Genocide Convention of the UN.
Additionally, the cultural sector in Germany right now is witnessing a boycott after artists and workers created the ‘Strike Germany‘ petition that denounces “McCarthyist policies.” The petition gathered more than 1,000 names of different authors, including Nobel Prize winners.
