Sustainability Takes Root: CMU-Q Becomes MENA’s First EcoCampus Green Flag Winner
By Islam Salah
Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) has made a remarkable leap toward sustainability, becoming the first university in the MENA region to receive the prestigious FEE EcoCampus Green Flag.
This achievement highlights CMU-Q’s dedication to protecting the environment and its active efforts to promote sustainable practices throughout its campus. Let’s find out what that means for the university and the region!
What Does the Green Flag Certification Mean?
The FEE EcoCampus Green Flag is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). It’s a leading organization focused on promoting environmental education.
The award acknowledges institutions that make exceptional efforts to integrate sustainability into their operations and culture. It’s not just about reducing waste or conserving energy; it’s a holistic approach that empowers the entire campus community to actively contribute to environmental goals.
CMU-Q’s Path to Sustainability Excellence
For CMU-Q, earning the Green Flag means the campus has met strict environmental standards and embraced the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These guidelines range from tackling climate change to promoting responsible consumption and production.
CMU-Q’s commitment to these objectives has now been recognized at a regional level.
A Community Effort
Achieving the Green Flag wasn’t an overnight accomplishment. It was the result of a dedicated, four-year-long effort involving CMU-Q students, staff, and faculty working together.
The journey began in September 2020 with a clear vision to integrate sustainability into every aspect of campus life. The initiative, led by professors Jennifer Bruder and Elissar Hajjar, focused on three core areas: food equity, climate change, and waste management.
As part of the sustainability journey, CMU-Q established a community garden, which serves as a green space and helps reduce waste by composting cafeteria scraps. This project, along with other initiatives, made a remarkable impact on campus operations and helped CMU-Q earn its Green Flag status.
Looking Ahead
As CMU-Q celebrates this achievement, the journey is far from over. The university plans to continue its sustainability efforts, inspiring change within its community and beyond.
Earning the FEE EcoCampus Green Flag means CMU-Q has set a powerful example for universities across the MENA region. This proves that sustainability is not just a trend but a value that drives real, positive change.
