AUC Students Strike as Fees Increase Following Egyptian Pound Floatation

This past week, Egyptians have been struck silent by the news of the Egyptian pound floatation that left our currency literally in a free-fall. While citizens have already been noticing that everything is already more expensive especially after the additional rise in fuel prices, parents who chose private education for their children have been exceptionally suffering as well from the consequences of our disastrous economy.

Multiple footage of students at the American Univerity in Egypt protesting infront of the admission office have surfaced on the AUC Student Union Facebook page.  The videos show students shouting ‘Yali saket, saket lih, abouk 7aramy wala eh?’ in an attempt to encourage students to stand up against the unexpected increase in fees.

While some commenters have been attacking the students by calling them rich kids and comparing them to the less fortunate citizens, people have to understand that most of the parents who send their kids to private schools and universities barely have the full fees at the begining of the year, and at times the only thing that makes their decisions tolerable is the fact that the fees are paid in installments. It is not just AUC students who have been complaining, almost every private school’s fees have risen by 30% in less than a week.

WE SAID THIS:  This is becoming an ugly situation for everyone and a temporary solution would be for schools to fix a foreign rate, whether dollars or sterlings, otherwise kids will drop out.
