Rumor has it that Hussein Fahmy and Mervat Amin could be back on the big screen together after 44 years in anew movie. As we wait to see if the iconic duo reunites, here’s a look back at the films that made them one of Egyptian cinema’s most memorable couples.
Raghbat Mamnoua (1972)
Their story on screen began with Raghbat Mamnoua (Forbidden Desires), which was also their first film together. Fahmy played Ahmed, the educated son of a controlling father, while Amin played Azza, an art student who falls in love with him. The two dream of marrying and leaving Egypt to continue their studies abroad, but Ahmed struggles to break free from his father’s control. Their relationship becomes tangled in the darker conflicts inside Ahmed’s family home.
Interestingly, this film came before their reported real-life romance, making it the starting point of a screen partnership that would soon become something much more personal.

Nagham Fi Hayati (1975)
Three years later, the pair reunited in Nagham Fi Hayati (The Melody of My Life), starring alongside legendary singer and composer Farid Al Atrash. Amin played Hanan, a young law student who falls in love with Fahmy’s character, Mohsen. Their relationship takes a tragic turn when Mohsen leaves for Brazil in search of a better life after learning that Hanan is pregnant.
The film is particularly significant outside the story itself: multiple accounts identify Nagham Fi Hayati as the project where Fahmy’s feelings for Amin reportedly developed, turning their on-screen chemistry into a real-life romance.

Hafeya Ala Gesr Al Zahab (1976)
In Hafeya Ala Gesr Al Zahab (Barefoot on the Gold Bridge), Amin played Camellia, an aspiring actress who becomes involved with Fahmy’s successful filmmaker and actor, Ahmed Samah. Their romance is complicated when Adel Adham’s powerful character, Aziz, becomes interested in Camellia and attempts to drive the couple apart.
The film combines romance, crime and melodrama, with Camellia ultimately making a devastating sacrifice to protect the man she loves. It remains one of Fahmy and Amin’s most remembered collaborations.

Mokalama Baad Montasaf El Leil (1978)
By the time they made Mokalama Baad Montasaf El Leil (A Midnight Phone Call), their real-life relationship had become part of the story surrounding their work. The film itself is a mystery about Dr. Emad, played by Fahmy, who marries Nahed, played by Amin, only to begin receiving threatening phone calls from an unknown person. As strange incidents unfold, Emad turns to the police and eventually discovers that Nahed’s cousin Adel is behind the threats because he is in love with her and had hoped to marry her.
But the film is remembered for something even more personal. During production, Fahmy and Amin reportedly got married in real life, and director Helmy Rafla filmed their wedding as part of the movie. Amin has recalled that the wedding scene was filmed using the same dress and suit worn for their actual wedding.
In other words, one of Egyptian cinema’s most memorable fictional weddings was also, in a very unusual twist, a real one.

Al-Kalema Al-Akhira (1982)
Their final film together was Al-Kalema Al-Akhira (The Last Word), released in 1982. Amin played Zahra, a popular singer who finds herself entering the world of Egypt’s wealthy elite, where secrets, deception and unexpected complications begin to unravel around her. Fahmy played Aziz, with the film blending romance, social drama and intrigue.

Now, with reports of Check In, the new movie bringing them together, Egyptian cinema could be getting a reunion that once seemed almost impossible, 44 years after their final movie together and decades after the love story that began between takes.
