From the Nile to the Seine: Paris Remembers Umm Kulthum

From January 30 to February 2, the Philharmonie de Paris will honor the 50th anniversary of Umm Kulthum’s passing with a three-day celebration of her music and legacy.

Known as “El Sett,” the Lady, and the “The Star of the Orient,” Umm Kulthum’s voice united Arab audiences and captivated listeners worldwide. This tribute highlights her enduring influence, featuring performances that reimagine her works and celebrate her cultural significance.

January 30: Modern Interpretations With Love and Revenge

The tribute begins with Love and Revenge’s night called Agmal Layali. They are a group renowned for their contemporary reinterpretations of Middle Eastern music.

Incorporating electronic sounds and multimedia, they will bring a fresh perspective to Umm Kulthum’s iconic songs. This innovative performance bridges the past and present, introducing her timeless music to new generations.

February 1: Homage to Umm Kulthum’s Birthplace With A Night on the Nile

The second day offers a rich exploration of Umm Kulthum’s roots. Les Musiciens du Nil – A Night on the Nile – brings a legendary ensemble from Luxor, who will recreate the vibrant atmosphere of an Upper Egyptian village reminiscent of the one where Umm Kulthum was born.

Their performance celebrates the cultural traditions that shaped her artistry.

February 2: A Classical Celebration

The grand finale features the Arab Music Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Alaa Abdel Salam. Accompanied by vocalists Rehab Omar and Iman Abdel Ghani, the orchestra will perform a selection of Umm Kulthum’s greatest masterpieces, from Enta Omri to Alf Leila wa Leila.

This classical homage highlights her profound contributions to Arab music and the universal appeal of her art.
