Ten years on, the repercussions of the US-led invasion of Iraq are still being felt. This is partly because the foreign troops haven’t left, yet. But Iraq has become old news. Nobody is outraged anymore or raising their voice in revolt. The focus has shifted from the plight of the Iraqi people to the plight of US veterans returning from the war with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and poor health care.

I recently saw an article on the BBC News website comparing the economic conditions of Iraqis now to 2003. Not surprisingly, it provides a rather optimistic outlook. What was even more infuriating was the following statement: “one of the main obstacles to Iraq’s economic and social development is the lack of reliable electricity supply.”

That is a rather large obstacle and I’m no expert on Iraqi affairs, but I think we can all agree that their obstacles extend far beyond electricity supplies.
