Picture of the Day: Gate to Babylon, Iraq
Babylon is the most famous ancient city in the world. Located in south central of Iraq, it was estimated to be the largest city in the world from c. 1770 – c. 1670 BC, and again c. 612 – c. 320 BC. It was the first city to reach a population above 200,000.
The original Gate of Babylon is currently at a museum in Berlin, Germany. The one that is in Iraq is just a replica. The locals like to say “the Germans are keeping it safe for now, it’s safer there than here, but when situation here (Iraq) is good again, will we want it back.”
