The Portuguese superstar is expected to captain his side when the two teams meet at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium on Tuesday, September 15, marking the opening match of their 2026/27 campaign. With Al Nassr scheduled to return to the UAE later in the season to face Shabab Al Ahli in Dubai in February 2027, Tuesday’s match may not necessarily be his final UAE appearance. Still, with Ronaldo suggesting that this could be his last year in football, opportunities to see him play live are becoming increasingly limited.
When Was the Last Time Ronaldo Faced Al Ain?
The most recent meeting between Al Nassr and Al Ain came in November 2024 during the AFC Champions League Elite league stage. Playing in Riyadh, Al Nassr delivered a dominant 5–1 win, with Ronaldo among the scorers.
But their previous meeting in Al Ain was a very different story.
Ronaldo’s Last Competitive Visit to Al Ain
Ronaldo’s last competitive visit to Hazza bin Zayed Stadium came in March 2024, when Al Nassr faced Al Ain in the first leg of their AFC Champions League quarter-final.
Al Ain won 1–0 at home, with Soufiane Rahimi scoring the only goal of the match. Al Nassr later won the second leg 4–3 after extra time, but Al Ain ultimately advanced after winning the penalty shootout 3–1. The UAE side went on to win the AFC Champions League that season.
That makes Tuesday’s return particularly interesting, with Ronaldo back at the same stadium where Al Ain previously helped end Al Nassr’s continental campaign.
The Controversy Surrounding Ronaldo Ahead of the Match
Ronaldo arrives in the UAE following a weekend of controversy in the Saudi Pro League.
During Al Taawoun’s match against Al Hilal, some supporters appeared to chant the name of the late Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota toward Al Hilal midfielder Rúben Neves, who was a close friend and former teammate of Jota. Jota died in a car crash in July 2025 alongside his brother André Silva.
Ronaldo strongly condemned the incident, calling for those responsible to receive lifetime bans from stadiums. He said football needed limits and urged the league to take action against supporters who cross the line. Saudi football authorities, along with Al Hilal and Al Taawoun, have also condemned the chants, with an investigation underway.
Now, Ronaldo turns his attention back to the pitch, with Al Nassr beginning their AFC Champions League Elite campaign against an Al Ain side that knows all too well how to make things difficult for him.
