Some true-crime stories come with a neat ending. Others leave behind more questions than answers and the Bani Mazar massacre is firmly in the second category.
In December 2005, a quiet village in Minya became the centre of one of Egypt’s most baffling criminal cases after 10 members of three families were found dead inside their homes. What followed was a maze of rumours, conflicting theories, investigations and a controversial prosecution that ultimately failed to reveal who was responsible.
Now, more than two decades later, the case is being revisited in El Qessa El Kamla, with its second instalment, “Ma Lam Yuhka An Bani Mazar“, bringing the infamous case back to the screen.
A Village Wakes Up to a Nightmare
At dawn on December 29, 2005, residents of Ezbet Shams El-Din, in the Bani Mazar district of Minya Governorate, discovered that something terrible had happened during the night.
Ten people from three different families had been killed inside three neighbouring homes. The victims included adults and children, making the scale of the crime particularly shocking for a rural community where the homes had been considered ordinary, familiar spaces.
The killings appeared to have happened within a short period of time, yet there was no obvious explanation for how the perpetrator managed to move between the three houses and disappear without leaving a clear trail.
And that was only the beginning of the mystery.
The fact that three homes were targeted in the same night raised an obvious question: why these families?
That question would become one of the central mysteries surrounding the investigation.
The Details That Made the Case So Strange
What distinguished the Bani Mazar case was not simply the number of victims, but the unusual circumstances surrounding the crime.
Investigators determined that the victims had been killed in a similar manner, while some of the bodies had also been mutilated.
One of the details that added another layer of mystery was that a slaughtered pigeon was reportedly found beside each body. Combined with the unusual state of the crime scenes, the detail quickly fueled speculation about what had happened inside the three homes.
The unusual details quickly became the subject of intense public speculation, with theories emerging that went far beyond an ordinary murder case.
The Theaories
Among the rumours was the idea that the crime could somehow be connected to a search for an ancient Egyptian tomb or buried treasure. Another theory involved alleged satanic rituals and supposed attempts to communicate with supernatural forces through human sacrifice.
None of these theories provided a definitive explanation for what happened, but they helped turn an already extraordinary criminal case into something that seemed almost impossible to untangle.
The Investigation Takes a Turn
Police eventually arrested a 27-year-old man, Mohamed Abdel Latif, and accused him of carrying out the killings.
But the case against him quickly became complicated.
According to the account presented in coverage of the case, his confession conflicted with a psychiatric assessment, while questions were also raised over whether one person could have carried out the entire crime within the estimated timeframe.
The court ultimately acquitted him.
With no definitive perpetrator established, the case remained unresolved and the question of who killed the ten victims continued to hang over Bani Mazar.
So, Who Did It?
That is precisely where the story gets frustrating.
Despite the investigation, arrest and trial, the identity of the person responsible was never conclusively established. The case eventually became associated with crimes recorded against an unknown perpetrator, leaving behind a collection of theories but no definitive answer.
Over the years, the stranger details of the case have continued to fuel speculation, while the lack of a clear resolution has made Bani Mazar one of Egypt’s most discussed unsolved criminal cases.
And, as is often the case with mysteries that never receive a satisfying ending, every unanswered question seems to create another one.
The Case Returns to the Screen
Now, El Qessa El Kamla is taking another look at the case with “Ma Lam Yuhka An Bani Mazar”, the second story in the series.
Written by Hani Sarhan, directed by Ahmed Nader Galal, the three-episode story stars Ahmed Abd El Wahab, Ahmed Abdelhamid, Michel Milad, Mourad Makram, Safaa ElToukhy, Arfa Abdel Rasoul and Khaled El Sawy.
The series itself is structured as five standalone stories across its first season, with each three-episode arc drawing from real events and Egyptian criminal files. The cases were previously explored by content creator and director Sameh Sanad through his El Qessa El Kamla social-media programme before being adapted into drama.
Following “L’abet Gohanam”, the Bani Mazar story is the second case to enter the series’ fictionalised world — this time bringing one of Egypt’s most persistent criminal mysteries to a new audience.
The Mystery Lives On
More than 20 years after that December morning in Minya, the Bani Mazar massacre still has something that most true-crime stories eventually lose: a definitive ending.
There was an investigation. There was an arrest. There was a trial. But there was no confirmed answer to the biggest question of all.
And perhaps that is exactly why the case continues to fascinate. “Ma Lam Yuhka An Bani Mazar” isn’t simply revisiting a notorious crime; it is reopening a story that, in real life, never truly received its final chapter.
