Leaked US State Dept Memo Blasts Israel Policy & Accuses Biden Of Spreading Misinformation

About a hundred USAID employees signed a five-page memo, organized by a junior diplomat which was transmitted to the State Department policy office on November 3rd. The memo opens by acknowledging the recent Hamas attack on Israelis on October 7 but proceeds to draw a line between this attack and the Israeli response that killed 10X the number of civilians so far and denounces “tolerance” for such a high civilian death toll. It offers a window into stark divisions between Biden’s public statements and the opinions of the administration’s diplomats on the subject.

The junior diplomat who organized the memo has implied on social media earlier that Biden’s support for Israel has made him complicit in genocide. The message suggests a growing loss of confidence among U.S. diplomats in President Joe Biden’s approach to the Middle East crisis. According to Politico, the memo reads that this division between America’s public appearance and private inner messages “contributes to regional public perceptions that the United States is a biased and dishonest actor, which at best does not advance, and at worst harms, U.S. interests worldwide.”

“We must publicly criticize Israel’s violations of international norms…we must communicate publicly that this goes against our American values so that Israel does not act with impunity.”

This is not the only memo circulation in the US State Department, there are other ones, but the content of such memos is rarely leaked. The Dissent Channel has been established to allow for free speech without reprisal or consequences.
