Dubai Police Recover Lost Luggage Containing 25,000 AED Within 30 Minutes

An Egyptian traveler at Dubai International Airport recently reported a case of lost luggage after mistakenly picking up the wrong suitcase.

The bag, which contained 25,000 AED in cash along with important travel documents, was recovered by the Dubai Police. Let’s find out how the mix-up happened and what the authorities did to resolve the issue. 

The Initial Mix-Up: How It Happened

Mounir Said Ibrahim, an Egyptian traveler, arrived at Dubai International Airport on a flight from Cairo. Upon retrieving his luggage from the baggage carousel, he mistakenly took a similar-looking suitcase belonging to another passenger. 

The bag contained $7,000 (approximately 25,000 AED) in cash, along with Mounir’s essential travel documents. When he realized the mistake, he immediately went to the airport police office to report the incident, with only an hour left before his connecting flight to China.

Dubai Police Response

Dubai Police responded swiftly to the situation. Upon receiving Mounir’s report, officers reviewed surveillance footage and traced his movements through the airport. 

They also coordinated with Emirates Airlines, which had flown him from Cairo, to verify details and confirm the route. The police’s rapid response and experience with handling such incidents allowed them to swiftly begin the process of locating the misplaced luggage.

Through their investigation, Dubai Police identified the female passenger who had mistakenly taken Mounir’s bag. She was still inside the airport, waiting for her relatives, and was unaware of the mix-up. Officers approached her, explained the situation, and arranged to return the bags to their rightful owners.

Resolution and Outcome

In just 30 minutes, the bags were swapped back, and both Mounir and the other passenger received their correct luggage. Mounir was able to catch his connecting flight to China, and the female passenger was reunited with her belongings. 

Dubai Police are known for their high standards of security and customer service at Dubai International Airport. In addition to this case, the force has previously assisted travelers by returning lost items, such as a watch forgotten by an Indian pilot and 77,000 AED recovered from a taxi driver in 2022.
