A Scoop of Hope: People in the UAE and Egypt Reach Out to Help Those Who’ve Lost Their Job During the Pandemic

Although it’s a tough time for companies and staff who are collectively suffering from the economic drawbacks of this unprecedented time, having a supportive community is one of the positive outcomes of this crisis, especially when the support comes from people you don’t know personally.

With hashtags like #strongertogether and #wecanhelp, LinkedIn has been flooded with posts from both recruiters and people who just want to help those who were recently laid off as a result of the ongoing pandemic.

After Careem and Uber laid off over 500 employees, many start-ups announced that they’re hiring, giving priority to those who have recently lost their jobs at Careem or Uber. Others who have no job vacancies to offer decided to help by offering to connect them to recruiters, or even assist them with their resumes.

Even before the Careem and Uber crisis, people in the Middle East and abroad have been losing their jobs at a scary pace, one of the more negative impacts of the coronavirus outbreak.

Today, our company let go of 3,700 employees in several countries, including 300 in Egypt, with different positions. Thankfully, I wasn’t one of them, but many of my colleagues who have families to take care of, lost their jobs. If anyone knows a company who is hiring, please let me know and I will tell them.

In such hard times, we keep on learning new things. Our dream for mass mobility with Careem Bus had to come to an end…
