Former Minister Nabila Makram Admits She Resigned After Son Arrested For Murder
Back in August 2022, Nabila Makram, Ex-Minister of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates, was replaced as part of a cabinet reshuffle. However, on Sunday, Makram appeared on Hadith El Qahira, presented by famous TV Host Khairy Ramadan on the Al Qahira Wal Nas channel to speak about the details surrounding her son. Ramy Fahim, 27, was charged by a California court last year with offenses including two murders, lying in wait, and the personal use of a deadly weapon in April last year. Residing in Irvine, California, Fahim may be facing the death penalty for stabbing his co-worker and roommate according to a California district attorney statement.
Fahim has entered a not-guilty plea to all counts, and during his initial hearing, his defense team provided the court with documents claiming that he suffers from schizophrenia. He was accused of breaking into Griffin Cuomo’s home, a 23-year-old coworker, and waiting for him to come home before killing him and Jonathan Bahm, his roommate.
Makram stated on the show that she decided to leave because as minister, she did not want her personal life to result in negatively reflecting on her position. In light of this, the minister has boosted her charity efforts in the area of mental health since the news of the tragedy initially surfaced. At a prominent event where several Egyptian politicians were present, she announced the launch of the Fahim Foundation.
During the launch, she thanked her husband and her two other sons for their support. She then emphasized that, “if the family doesn’t understand a mental illness that one of its members might have, it becomes infinitely more difficult to treat and support them.” Makram also stated that her husband travelled to the US to be with his son throughout his trial while she remained in Egypt.
