Baghdad Sends A Powerful Message And Decorates Their Christmas Tree With Pictures of Revolutionary Martyrs
Protests in Baghdad have been ongoing for months now, blood filled the streets, many were injured and hundreds lost their lives fighting for a nation, a united Iraq that is free of sectarianism. I left my beloved country more than a decade ago, and I’m deeply saddened by the current situation, feeling so helpless and frustrated, but at the same time I still have hope that a better future is definitely ahead of us.
The holiday season is upon us, but how can we celebrate with this much grief and pain? In solidarity with all the families who lost their loved ones during the protests, Iraqis decided to set up this year’s Christmas tree differently! Baghdad’s Tahrir Square, which is currently occupied by anti-government protesters is not decorated with your usual Christmas ornaments, but instead, the protestors hung different portraits of those who were killed under fire from security forces.
My condolences to all families who lost their loved ones during the protests, and hopefully this same time next year we will celebrate it with a more joyful sphere.
