Uber and Careem Services To Continue In Egypt Until Court’s Official Ruling

Last night, news regarding leading transportation apps in Egypt went viral. According to several news sources, including Youm7, Egyptian State Council decided to accept lawsuit to halt the services provided by Uber Egypt and Careem. The Administrative Court of the State Council, headed by Chancellor Bakheet Ismail, decided on Tuesday, to accept the lawsuit made by Alaa Mohammed and others to stop the operations of the transportation tycoons.

To call the decision a disaster is an understatement. Ever since Uber and Careem came into our lives, we’ve been feeling safer than ever no matter how bad the drivers have become. We’ve been rescued from the state of public transportation, the harassment women are subjected to, the way white taxi drivers treat passengers, how much money they ask for, and the excruciating wait for buses. The list of inhumane conditions is endless. Needless to mention, the number of drivers who have made a living through the apps.

Luckily Uber and Careem released statements last night denying that their services are currently suspended. Uber Egypt announced that the company will appeal the decision, adding that they enabled over 150k Egyptian economic opportunities in 2017 alone.
