Move For The Cure

Breast Cancer is the most common tumor in women and a leading cause of death of women in Egypt.

However, with early detection it is easily manageable. Cancer awareness is becoming a crucial part of our social and health education with the aim of propagating the culture of self breast examination, having yearly checkups and mammograms after menopause and so on.

A new idea is being spread across Cairo and hopefully across the country soon: Move for the cure. As with any other disease, methods of prevention vary, but they are there and awareness of those measures should be known to the public. It has been recently published that regular aerobic exercise helps prevent the development of Breast Cancer in women.

The Women in Steady Exercise Research (WISER) clinical trial followed 391 women between inactive, healthy premenopausal women along the course of 16 weeks analyzing their Estrogen levels and the byproducts of its metabolism: Estrogen is the hormone that has been linked to Breast Cancer.
They found out that  healthy non-carcinogenic byproducts of Estrogen are found in abundance in women who perform 30 minutes of active physical activity five times a week.

The Byproducts are called 2-OHE1 and less of another called 16alpha-OHE1, which have  been linked with a reduction in Breast Cancer risk. There were no changes in the levels of these chemicals in those who did not exercise.

So regular aerobic exercise does not only help with your weight control and heart health, it also helps prevent you from developing such a nightmare as Breast Cancer. And what aerobic exercise is better than dancing ?!!

This Saturday, June 8th, El Sawy Culture Wheel will be hosting a ladies only dance event in Collaboration with the Breast Cancer Foundation Of Egypt (BCFE) and the quickly growing Zumba fitness craze. 1/3 of the tickets’ value  would go to the Breast Cancer Foundation for research and awareness campaigns.
