Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya’s journey into medicine was driven by a deep-rooted passion for helping others, particularly the most vulnerable. A pediatrician by training, he dedicated his career to the care of children, which led him to become the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza.

Throughout his career, Abu Safiya faced constant challenges, navigating a healthcare system that had been under siege for years, long before the current genocide.

Dr. Abu Safiya’s leadership during Gaza’s ongoing genocide has been nothing short of remarkable. Amid the relentless blockade and bombing, he remained a pillar of strength.

As airstrikes battered the region, he used his voice to call for international attention, posting videos and messages pleading for intervention to protect the hospital and its patients.

His personal suffering only added to his resolve—his son tragically died in an earlier attack on the hospital, and Abu Safiya himself was wounded in a later airstrike.

On December 27, 2024, Israeli forces stormed Kamal Adwan Hospital, setting fire to several departments and forcibly evacuating patients and staff. During the assault, Dr. Abu Safiya was beaten before being arrested, along with other medical workers.

The violence left northern Gaza in an even more precarious situation, with essential healthcare services halted. With the hospital destroyed and key figures detained, the absence of functioning hospitals in the north left thousands of civilians without the care they desperately needed.
