Ibrahim Adel’s Winning Goals Spark Egypt’s Olympic Quarter-Final Push: Why This Win Matters?
Slowly but surely, Egypt’s football team has been climbing up the ranks to nab the Olympic gold. They knew how to surprise us all when they secured a spot in the quarter-finals after a surprise 2-1 win over Spain on Tuesday.
Who Scored the Win?
Bringing the team to victory was 23-year-old Port Said native Ibrahim Adel who’s been a winger in the Egyptian Premier League since 2018. He scored not one but two goals during the match.
Late in the first half, he came in hot and earned the team the first point through an impressive strike. He then added another win in the 62nd minute. By winning the match, Egypt snatched first place in Group C.
Why It’s a Big Deal
The win gives Egypt a big push as it propels them to the quarter-finals, a spot they already knew how to secure during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Last year, the team reached the quarter-finals but lost to Brazil, which went on to beat Spain in the finals.
Having the team once again reach the quarter-finals gives them another chance to win that gold. Even Adel is vying for the gold, “We have not achieved anything yet. We are Egypt, and we have the ability to do more… We are optimistic about winning a medal.”
Next, the team will play in the quarter-finals on Friday in Marseille against the runners-up in Group D, which includes Japan, Paraguay, Mali, and Israel.
