Egypt’s World Cup journey has reached the knockout stage, with the Pharaohs set to face Australia in the Round of 32 for a place in the last 16. The meeting will be the first between the two nations in more than 15 years, as Egypt looks to continue its historic run at the FIFA World Cup.
Before kick-off, here’s everything you need to know.
Previous encounters
Egypt and Australia have met only twice before.
Their first encounter came at the 1987 President’s Cup in South Korea, where the sides played out a goalless draw. Australia went on to win the ensuing penalty shootout 4-3.
More than two decades later, the Pharaohs claimed a convincing 3-0 victory in an international friendly at Cairo International Stadium in 2010. The match served as a warm-up for Australia ahead of the AFC Asian Cup. Ahmed Abdelzaher opened the scoring before Mohamed Nagui “Gedo” doubled Egypt’s lead in the second half. Mohamed Zidan then converted a late penalty to complete the win.

Australia’s key players
Australia’s squad blends experienced internationals with a disciplined tactical approach under head coach Tony Popovic.
Captain Mathew Ryan remains one of the team’s most influential figures. The veteran goalkeeper, who plays for Levante UD, has made more than 100 appearances for the Socceroos and brings valuable leadership and experience to the back line.
In midfield, Jackson Irvine is the heartbeat of the team. The St. Pauli captain is known for his tireless work rate, physical presence and ability to link defence with attack, making him one of Australia’s most important players.
FIFA rankings and World Cup history
The two sides are closely matched in the latest FIFA Men’s World Rankings, with Egypt sitting 26th and Australia just behind in 28th.
While this is Egypt’s first appearance in the knockout stage of a World Cup, Australia have reached the Round of 16 twice before, in 2006 and again in 2022.

How both teams reached the Round of 32
Australia finished second in Group D with four points. The Socceroos opened their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Türkiye, suffered a 2-0 defeat to the United States, and secured qualification with a goalless draw against Paraguay.
Egypt also finished second in Group G, collecting five points. The Pharaohs began with a draw against Belgium before claiming a historic victory over the Netherlands. A 1-1 draw with Iran in their final group match sealed qualification for the knockout rounds.

What’s at stake?
A victory over Australia would send Egypt into the World Cup Round of 16 for the first time in the nation’s history. Awaiting the winner will be either Argentina or Cape Verde, who face each other later the same day for a place in the next round.
For Hossam Hassan’s side, another win would not only extend Egypt’s best-ever World Cup campaign but move the Pharaohs one step closer to an unprecedented run on football’s biggest stage.
Regardless of the result, Egypt has already achieved a historic milestone by reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time. But with Australia standing between the Pharaohs and another piece of history, the focus now shifts from making memories to making an even deeper run. One more victory would cement this squad’s place among the greatest in Egyptian football history.
