Located in 141 East 96th Street, New York, Gyro96 has been spreading the fragrances that would sweep  Egyptians living in New York off their feet and carry them in a moment of nostalgia to the motherland with its delicious cuisines.

Waled Haredy, from Mansoura, Egypt, opened this Egyptian food hub last May, and has been killing it ever since. With the priciest item on the menu being the Rocket, priced at $ 8, Haredy’s motto is, “Good food doesn’t need to be expensive. Good food doesn’t need a reservation. Good food just needs love.” Even though the rent is a pain, Haredy and his friend Inna Sobel insist on keeping the prices low to encourage their growing fan base.

Sobel, a real estate broker, pushed him to relocate Gyro96 from Harlem to 96th street, believing his talent should be brought to bigger spotlights. “We try our best to keep them returning for new dishes,” she said. They have customers going to them for breakfasts, then returning for lunch breaks… everyone has been developing a crush on Haredy’s recipes and ingredients.

He is very secretive over how he cooks up these golden brown, crunchy ta3meyas (also known as falafel). His recipes date back to generations of grandmothers back in his hometown. He also follows his mother’s recipe for hibiscus, or karkade, a cool, sweet drink that Haredy recommends as a closure to his oriental cuisines.

WE SAID THIS: Re2na gery ya Haredy!
