After making a striking debut in Doha, Art Basel Qatar is already setting the tone for what’s next. Known globally as one of the most influential platforms for modern and contemporary art, Art Basel continues to expand its footprint across major cultural capitals, and now, Qatar’s growing art scene is preparing for another major moment on the international stage.
The fair has officially announced new details surrounding its highly anticipated second edition, including the appointment of Iraqi-born curator Wassan Al-Khudhairi as artistic director, alongside the unveiling of the fair’s curatorial theme, between / بين.
Art Basel Qatar Returns to Doha in 2027
The second edition of Art Basel Qatar is set to return to Msheireb Downtown Doha from January 28 to 30, 2027, with Preview Days taking place on January 26 and 27. Presented in partnership with Qatar Sports Investments and QC+, and with Qatar Airways serving as Premium Partner, the upcoming edition is expected to once again position Doha as a major meeting point for the global art world.
The fair will continue to spread across several cultural spaces in the city, including the Doha Design District and M7, further blending art, design, fashion, and creative exchange within the heart of the capital.

How Art Basel Qatar First Made Its Mark
The 2027 edition continues where the inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar left off. The first Qatar edition took place in February 2026 across M7 and the Doha Design District, introducing a fresh take on the traditional art fair model. Led by acclaimed Egyptian artist and filmmaker Wael Shawky, the fair exclusively featured 87 curated solo gallery presentations from 31 countries. Unfolding under the theme Becoming, the edition explored ideas of transformation and the systems that shape belief, identity, and meaning across the Gulf and beyond.

Wassan Al-Khudhairi Takes the Lead
Leading the artistic vision for the 2027 edition is Wassan Al-Khudhairi, a curator whose work has shaped conversations around contemporary art across the region and beyond. Based in New York, Al-Khudhairi is widely recognized for her work with international art institutions and biennials, bringing both regional depth and global perspective to the role.
She previously served as the founding director of Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art, overseeing the museum’s opening in 2010 and helping establish it as one of the Arab world’s leading institutions dedicated to modern art. She is also currently a partner at The Curatorial / Office.
Now, she has been tasked with shaping the next chapter of Art Basel Qatar through a theme that feels especially relevant in today’s world.

Exploring the Meaning of “Between”
The newly revealed curatorial theme, between / بين, centers around the idea of existing in the “between” — not as an empty gap, but as a space full of movement, possibility, and transformation.
According to the fair, the concept explores how being between identities, cultures, places, and perspectives can become a generative space for encounter and exchange. Rather than seeking fixed definitions or clear-cut positions, the theme embraces fluidity and openness, asking what becomes possible when people choose to inhabit the spaces in between instead of trying to close them.
It’s a theme that feels deeply tied to Doha itself: a city positioned between histories and futures, local narratives and global conversations, tradition and experimentation.

Gallery Applications Are Now Open
Alongside the announcement, Art Basel Qatar also confirmed that gallery applications for the 2027 edition officially opened this week. As anticipation builds around the fair’s return, galleries from around the world are expected to once again gather in Doha for a program that bridges regional voices with the international contemporary art scene.

With a globally respected curator at the helm and a thought-provoking theme rooted in connection and exchange, Art Basel Qatar’s second edition is already shaping up to be far more than just an art fair. From the cultural spaces of Doha to the international galleries preparing to participate, between / بين promises a conversation that goes beyond borders; one that invites artists, audiences, and ideas to meet somewhere in the middle.
