17 Inspiring Photos of Kick-Ass Skater Girls in Afghanistan

(Via skateistan.org)

After Australian NGO Skateistan was established in Afghanistan in 2007, skateboarding has risen to be the number-one sport for women in the country. Apparently, since girls aren’t allowed to ride bicycles, they jumped on the opportunity to skateboard instead. Skateistan uses skateboarding as a tool for empowerment, incorporating education and youth leadership into their programs. Many of their students in Afghanistan are street children and over 40% are girls.

We could go on about globalization and neo-colonialism and Western imperial hegemony, but we don’t want to take away from the fact that these girls are kicking ass, learning new skills and enjoying it, despite all the shit their country has been through.
