Where Do Arab Students Stand With The First Amendment? The Story Of Palestinian Jad Abuhamad Not Being Able To Use His
The Council on American-Islamic Relations has requested the US Department of Education investigate the expulsion of both a Palestinian American high school student and his parent over pro-Palestinian content his mother posted on social media.
Jad Abuhamda, who is a 15 year old Palestinian student got expelled from a private school in Florida state, along with his mother “Maha Almasri” who worked as a math tutor. This is after she posted on social media about Israel’s brutality against children in Gaza. Her posts were received as hateful remarks, causing her suspension.
Almasri’s posts included an image of a soldier point machine gun at an infant at Al Shifa Hospital. The image referenced the news about the seize of Al Shifa two weeks ago when families had to leave their premature babies to meet an unknown destiny.
During a news conference Almasri said “None of my posts were inciting violence, they were merely shedding light on what was happening, the humanitarian crisis that was happening in Gaza… I feel that, criticizing a government or a set of people should not lead to any retaliation against that person who’s trying to express that”
Early this December, a student at New York University was stripped off her scholarships, and campus housing after a video of her went viral for tearing down a Pro Israel poster. In the last few weeks, with the rise of Pro Palestine groups, several universities disciplined students for attending pro Palestine protests and banned Pro Palestine groups such as Jewish Voices for Peace and Justice For Palestine.
