Working to defeat the trash crisis in Lebanon’s capital, the Lebanese civil initiative, Recycle Beirut, has just launched their first crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo. So far they’ve collected USD 925 via 16 backers, which brings them 9% closer to their USD 10,000 target.

“We are serving more than 800 households and businesses, employing 17 people, and are taking tons of recyclables out of the waste stream every day,” they stated in a press release sent this morning. As they grow, the initiative is in need of more trucks, machines, and equipment which will allows them to serve an expanding area of Beirut and Mount Lebanon.

The trash crisis dates back to 1997, when the Lebanese government took the Naameh processing facility as a temporary solution to the overflow of trash. Back then, authorities were told that it would take a maximum of two million tons of garbage. But now, it takes around fifteen.
