Amid Critical Food Shortage In Gaza, Canadian Singer The Weeknd Donates $2.5m
As the situation in the Gaza Strip worsens, humanitarians around the world are recognizing the urgency of donating to war-stricken Palestinians suffering from incredible food shortages. According to a press release published by the World Food Programme on November 16, Palestinians in Gaza are “On the verge of starvation.
According the the press release, the food infrastructure in Gaza is no longer functional; and only 25 percent of shops contracted by WFP remain open. Local markets have shut down completely. Small food quantities are sold at inflated prices. The people who are considered “lucky” are those who consume canned or stored food.
On Friday, November 1st, The United Nations World Food Programme Goodwill Ambassador, The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) dedicated $2.5 million from his XO fund to relief the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. This sum of money equated to 820 tons of food, or four million emergency meals that should be sufficient to feed more than 173,000 people in Gaza for two weeks.
The donation has been received positively all over social media, winning the hearts of fans. Amid overwhelming silence from many prominent Western celebrities, the news of Tesfaye’s donation at such a critical time has been rewarded by supporters of Palestine worldwide and is expected to inspire other celebrities to do the same.
