Alexandria’s Palm Beach Reopens After Three Years With Strict Safety Measures

Egypt’s infamous “death beach” in Al-Ajami, Alexandria governorate, has reopened after being closed for three years due to the high number of drowning incidents. The beach, officially known as Palm Beach, earned its nickname due to its reputation as a site of tragic fatalities. However, the beach’s reopening this summer was made possible by new safety regulations, field supervision, and adherence to standards set by the Egyptian Diving and Rescue Federation.

Dr. Mohamed Abdel Razek emphasized the strict restrictions on swimming outside designated areas and the need for immediate rescue facilities, such as jet skis, to be stationed within the water along with lifeguards stationed along the beachfront. Abdel Razek warned that any violation or laxity regarding the instructions would result in the immediate closure of the beach. “The lives of beachgoers are a red line we will not cross,” he said.

Osama Ali, director general of the General Administration of Resorts mentioned that theories have emerged suggesting that the breakwaters placed along the beach created dangerous whirlpools, particularly hazardous for inexperienced swimmers. The crisis escalated until the beach’s closure in 2020, following a series of mass drowning incidents that led to the Council of Ministers and Public Prosecution ordering its closure.

The reopening of Palm Beach is a promising development, and the public has shown good compliance with the new safety regulations. The successful implementation of these regulations will ensure that the beach remains a safe and enjoyable destination for locals and tourists alike.
