Youssef Chahine’s landmark film Cairo Station (Bab Al Hadid) has officially joined the Criterion Collection, the American distributor renowned for restoring and preserving influential world cinema. The film has been restored in 4K with an uncompressed monaural soundtrack, giving audiences the chance to experience the classic in unprecedented clarity.
The move further cements the film’s global reputation, bringing it to even more people across the U.S. and Canada via the Criterion Channel.
Alongside Cairo Station, Criterion will present a new 2K digital restoration of Al-Qahira Menawara be Ahlaha (Cairo as Seen by Chahine) (1991), introduced by film scholar Joseph Fahim, as well as Chahine.. Leh? (Chahine.. Why?) (2009), a documentary on the director. The edition also includes a segment from Chahine’s 1998 appearance at the Midnight Sun Film Festival.
Now, Bab Al Hadid is set to charm a whole new generation!
