Sir Beckham and Lady Victoria?
The former English football player David Beckham is rumored to be included in the list of names for this year’s New Year’s Honours. The fashionable football star has a chance to receive knighthood from the British Empire which means that he might be acquiring the title of Sir Beckham and, eventually, his wife would be Lady Victoria.
Beckham already has an OBE (Order of the British Empire), which had been awarded to him by her majesty the Queen back in 2003. However, this time the knighthood most likely will be granted by HRH Prince William, who lately began presenting the awards as part of his role as a full-time royal.
“We don’t confirm names or speculate on anything until the list is announced on December 31,” a spokesperson for the Cabinet Office declared.
“Generally the letters are sent out in mid to late November, so those being honoured will find out then. The letter says that the Prime Minister has been advised to contact you regarding this award, and asks if you are minded to accept. The person then responds to indicate if they are willing to accept the honour and are added to the list that is released in December. The letter obviously also emphasises the need for discretion.”
The iconic footballer is a good friend of HRH Prince William. The Duke of Cambridge joined forces with the retired footballer in a campaign against the illegal wildlife trade this year as part of WildAid’s demand reduction campaign in addition to their collaboration at the 2102 Olympics and Paralympics, which was a huge success.
The potential Sir Beckham has always been an A-lister, not only for his auspicious football career but also for being a fashion icon and a part of international ad campaigns like Coca Cola, Pepsi, Adidas, Samsung and the list is endless. Not to mention his wife, former pop star Victoria of girl group Spice Girls fame, who has now become one of the most recognized fashion designers worldwide.
There was much debate in the British tabloids about whether the famous couple is “good” enough for the honour, describing David as a good-looking footballer and Victoria as a modest singer who were just lucky enough. However, other magazines describe it as “exciting” and deserving, especially because of David’s notable charity work and his successful football career.
