#LoveYourself: Lonely People Are Not Losers
When will people stop mistaking independent people for losers?
Two days ago, I told some of my friends that I am going to a concert on my own. Firstly, because I don’t really enjoy the company of the people going, and secondly because I want to experience enjoying the music I love with total serenity and on my own. But, the replies were astonishingly horrible. “Don’t be such a loser!”, “Ohh, I will try to come with you ?”, “Really? You better not go.”, “Have you thought of the comments you will hear when people notice you’re alone at a concert?”
And it hit me: people do not appreciate private or personal moments. They instantly consider you a loser if you wish to enjoy something on your own.
1. When you go to a concert by yourself
Seriously though, what is better than enjoying your favorite band’s songs and music while reminiscing the memories each song brings, without sharing it with anyone.
2. Going to the cinema alone
What if there is a new movie you terribly want to watch, but your friends are not free for a company? Why is not okay to go on your own and do something that you really want to do? Or what if you just want to get rid of all the silly comments, loud laughs and wrong explanations? How is it any different from watching a movie at home, only a bigger screen, more comfortable chair and better sound?
3. Dining solo
Don’t they understand that you have the best company? What is better than enjoying your delicious food and slowly tasting every bite? At least you could then avoid sharing food with someone. Remember, Joey does not share food!
4. When you choose your company over others
Sometimes I really don’t have the energy to socialize or interact with people, and I would rather prefer sitting in the library/classroom watching Friends, Dexter or Game of Thrones. Other times, I feel swamped with assignments, readings and presentations that I would only prefer finishing them before my already over-due deadline gets postponed later. Why would that make me a loser? Begad??
5. Travelling alone
Travelling alone is an experience that many people don’t understand. While travelling with friends is a lot of fun, the experiences, discoveries and time one has to explore themselves and their passions without having to give in to the group around you is priceless! Take a look at these solo traveller tips to see the kind of challenges you might face, and how to prepare yourself, so that you can make the most of your time abroad. You get to do whatever your heart pleases and figure out a lot about yourself.
Please people, leave everyone find happiness in their own way, and instead of judging or discouraging it, try to be more supportive.
