Living With Coronavirus: Glimpses From ‘Everyday Egypt’
The coronavirus has unfortunately managed to reach our beloved Egypt, causing a wave of stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. The country’s future is blurry, everyone is scared and trying hard to balance between maintaining their own wellbeing and a stable income to feed their families. Luckily, many NGOs and international organizations are stepping forward to help those who are most vulnerable to the pandemic and its consequences.
“Everyday Egypt” is known for posting glimpses of everyday life in Egypt on social media, pictures that are usually happy, colorful and full of life. But as you can see in the pictures here, people are frightened and concerned about what the future has in store for them.
Recently, President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi requested that the authorities boost strategic reserves of staple goods. Egypt has not witnessed scenes of panic-buying on a mass scale such as what we’ve seen in many European countries during the pandemic. Nonetheless, officials have felt the need to reassure Egyptians that this behavior isn’t necessary and that the country is well-stocked.
Egypt’s senior officials have declared that the country is able to contain the virus; compared to surrounding countries, Egypt is at the stage of being able to contain the spread of the epidemic. But it’s also important that people still be aware of the importance of socially distancing themselves and not taking the situation we’re in for granted.
