Fact or Fiction: The Invisible Helmet

There’s a reason behind going to work on a bike or just going for a ride around town. It’s the fresh air, the feeling of freedom and the refreshment.

But the thing that ruins it all is that stupid, bulky helmet you have to put on to guarantee your safety. As much as we hate it and feel suffocated by it, it’s a MUST.

Luckily, two Swedish industrial design students, Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, have come up with something to make your bike ride much more stylish.

They’ve created the one and only “invisible helmet”. We know how that sounds: crazy, right?

It’s actually an airbag, which uses a helium gas cylinder to inflate when its sensors detect a sudden jolt.

Known as the Hovding, all you have to do is wear it around your neck, like a scarf. Only when it detects a sudden or abnormal movement, the airbag pops open.

What happens if the airbag doesn’t open? Of course a lot of questions are coming to mind. But the thing is, the helmets have undergone a variety of safety tests and are CE labeled.

Managing director Fredrik Carling stated that “Over 3,000 Hovdings are already being worn by cyclists around the world who appreciate its safety, its innovative design and its style.”
