The new regulation requires the owners of establishments, shops, restaurants, and grocery stores to replace plastic bags with eco-friendly ones that are made of biodegradable material or recyclable fabric by the end of this year.

The eco-friendly move is part of a larger initiative that aims to tackle the ongoing garbage crisis. The crisis peaked in 2015 when the capital’s main landfill shut down, creating garbage mountains on the coastline east of Beirut.
