Art Meets Education: Inside Alexandria’s Arab Origami Center
In Alexandria, Egypt, the Arab Origami Center (AOC) has become a unique hub of creativity and education since its establishment in 2011 by Ossama Helmy, also known as “OzOz.”
Known for his artistic prowess and performances, Helmy envisioned origami not just as an art form but as a transformative tool for education and cultural exchange. Over the years, AOC has grown into a vibrant community, inspiring individuals across the Middle East and beyond.
Education Through the Lens of Origami
At its core, AOC is committed to using origami to revolutionize education. The center trains educators and facilitators to incorporate origami into teaching, enhancing creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills among students.
These workshops cater to diverse groups, including children, educators, and marginalized communities, fostering inclusivity and skill development.
Bridging Cultures Through Workshops and Events
The Arab Origami Center hosts various events that celebrate cultural exchange and creativity. The annual Arab Origami Festival is a standout, with its fourth edition held in 2023 and its fifth edition yet to be announced.
The previous festivals showcased interdisciplinary workshops ranging from creative writing to engineering and pottery. Attendees were treated to visual arts exhibitions, storytelling, and performances, creating a holistic cultural experience.
A Step Towards Interconnectedness
AOC introduces a variety of workshop series, such as on sustainable art practices and various storytelling methods, such as their most recent workshop, Storigami.
Their sessions encourage the use of recycled materials in origami, promoting environmental awareness through creativity, cultural awareness, and effective communication methods.
Collaborations with international organizations such as the European Union are also bringing global perspectives and innovative techniques to AOC’s offerings.
The Arab Origami Center exemplifies how art can influence education, cultural exchange, and community development. With a focus on sustainability and inclusivity, the center continues to inspire and educate, one fold at a time.
