On November 28, 2025, Doha’s Education City will open Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum—the first museum ever dedicated to India’s modernist icon M. F. Husain. It celebrates the artist’s vibrant legacy, where painting, cinema, and poetry intertwined to tell stories of humanity and heritage.

Designed by the Artist Himself
The museum’s building is based on a 2008 sketch drawn by Husain, transforming his vision into architecture. The striking blue structure features bold geometric lines and calligraphic windows. Its name, Lawh Wa Qalam—meaning “Canvas and Pen”—symbolizes creativity as a source of wisdom and knowledge, echoing the artist’s deep belief in art as storytelling.

Inside the Museum
Spanning 32,300 square feet, the museum will showcase Husain’s vast and varied work—paintings, tapestries, films, photography, poetry, and installations. Among the highlights are Seeroo fi al ardh (Walking in the Earth), his monumental final piece celebrating humanity’s progress.

From Bollywood Posters to Global Fame
Before achieving international recognition, Husain painted Bollywood film posters barefoot. Those early days shaped his energetic brushstrokes and love for bold color, traits that defined his later masterpieces. His rise from the streets of Mumbai to global galleries became a story of artistic resilience and imagination.

Honoring His Legacy
In March 2025, Husain’s Gram Yatra (1954) made headlines when it sold for $13.8 million at Christie’s, setting a new record as the highest-selling modern Indian artwork ever at auction.
Now, with the opening of Lawh Wa Qalam, Qatar honors not just his body of work but his lifelong spirit of experimentation and his vision of art without boundaries.

A Dream Realized
Though Husain spent his final years in Qatar, his art belongs everywhere. The Lawh Wa Qalam Museum brings his story full circle—a space where color, cinema, and poetry meet. It’s not just a museum; it’s a realization of the artist’s dream, a living celebration of creativity, and a reminder that art, like Husain himself, never stands still.
