Egypt’s Space Agency Unveils Climate-Focused Satellite Plans

Back in 2018, Egypt joined the ever-growing space race by launching its very own space program known as the Egyptian Space Agency. Now, this agency is taking big steps in navigating space as they recently released several launch plans that are coming up soon.

The African Development Satellite

Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda are joining forces to design a satellite for studying climate change. All the countries will collaborate on the design, but Egypt will take the lead in assembly, integration, testing, and launch.

In preparation for the project, representatives from each of these countries were invited by the space agency to undergo training on how to build satellite subsystems.

Remote-Sensing Camera

Along with the African Development Satellite, the space agency plans to install a remote-sensing camera on the International Space Station (ISS). This camera will be designed and built entirely in Egypt before it is placed on the ISS.

SPNEX Satellite

The African Development Satellite won’t be the only one studying climate change. The agency is planning on launching another satellite called SPNEX, also dedicated to studying climate change. The satellite is set to be launched by the end of 2024.

Seeing how the world is currently facing the throes of climate change, from massive flooding to extremely high temperatures reaching as high as 50 degrees Celsius, these new satellites will contribute to learning more about the climate and devising solutions to combat it.
