Sudan Crisis Update: 300,000 Displaced In 4 Days
The Sudan crisis is one that has not only been ongoing for more than 6 months but whose impact continues to get more catastrophic for the Sudanese people. The latest crisis was the unfortunate displacement of 300,000 people from what used to be a safe haven for families displaced by the conflict. Zooming on the city of Wad Medani, the provincial capital of Jazeera province, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked the city and continued their onslaught of attacks which have been going on now for a month.
As a result, based on The UN agency International Organization for Migration (IOM), about 250,000 to 300,000 people fled the province, many on foot and ended up finding refuge in neighboring safer areas including the provinces of al-Qadarif, Sinnar and the White Nile. Along with that, some also found refuge in camps for displaced people while others sought shelter in local communities. Known as Sudan’s breadbasket, Jazeera which used to house six million Sudanese, took in 500,000 displaced citizens since the war erupted.
The catastrophic war began in mid-April, following escalating tensions between military chief Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan and RSF commander Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo over security force reform during negotiations for a new transitional government. Since then, the entire country has been plagued by a war that so far has seen the displacement of more than 6.9 million people and the killing of up to 9000 citizens as of October. It is a major crisis as the world continues to watch the war unfold.
