The 12-Hour Continuing Education Course for License Renewal in Massachusetts

Due to the social distancing norms to be followed during COVID-19, Massachusetts’ state government has permitted all construction supervisors to complete the continuing education (CE) course online. The Massachusetts construction supervisor license renewal classes are mandatory for the renewal of construction supervisors’ licenses.

The declaration was made on April 14th, 2020 by the MA Board of Building Regulations & Standards. It stated that the in-person class requirements would be waived off during the state of emergency. A state of emergency started officially on March 10th without any specific date when it would be over.

However, there are certain conditions attached to the 12-hour course for unrestricted licenses.

  • The applicant’s CSL license should have expired before the 10th March.
  • The license would expire or expired during the state of Emergency.
  • The license would expire within 90 days after the end of the state of emergency.

The course structure of the Massachusetts construction supervisor license renewal classes

The course is approved by the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure, and it includes:

  • Code review of four hours

You will gain in-depth knowledge about the changes that were introduced in the 9th edition of the Massachusetts Building Code. This course is required for all unrestricted licensees, CSFA -one-and-two family dwellings.

  • Workplace safety course of four hours

This section covers the rules related to general safety issues at the job site and the practices and requirements implemented by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

  • Two hour course on Energy

The course is about the updates in the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) of 2015 related to Massachusetts. This is not required for Demolition Specialty Licenses.

  • One hour course on Business Practices

You will get to learn about the best practices and worker’s compensation in the construction business to manage your job properly, both on-site and off-site.

  • One hour elective study on Masonry

This is related to construction techniques involved in bricks and concrete construction projects.

The remaining credit hours can be completed by studying approved electives or additional topics.

You have to complete the CE course at least 60 days before the expiry of your license. It is easy to remember the renewal date as the due date is fixed on the license holder’s birthday, and licenses have to be renewed every two years.

Several education providers in Massachusetts provide a package course of 12 hours online CE course for renewal of unrestricted licenses. These packages are affordable and would make it convenient for you to renew your licenses. The courses and the education providers are approved by the MA Board of Building Regulations & Standards and the CSL Continuing Education Council.

The course coordinator generally provides the completion certificate within 10 days of completion of the entire course. Since the certificate is issued online, you can take printouts or save them in your system.

Moreover, you can access the lessons from a mobile device like a laptop, tablet, or cell phone from any location. There would be no need to compromise on your job or travel to attend the classroom sessions.
