People in Manbij, a city in northern Aleppo, Syria, are celebrating their triumph against the militants of Daesh (or ISIS) after more than two years of besieging the city. Civilians and fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces, Syrian Arab Coalition celebrated equally by performing acts that were not allowed during Daesh’s siege.

Men celebrated by cutting off their beards, women took off their burkas and set them ablaze. As smoking was also not allowed under Daesh’s siege, and was also brutally punishable, Syrians smoked in celebration of their long-awaited liberty.

The liberators are a unity of Kurdish and Arab fighters, and the battling went on for months, resulting in the deaths of 1,500 people. “After the liberation of Manbij, ISIS members won’t be able to travel freely to and from Europe any more,” said Salih Muslim, a Syrian Kurdish leader.

Since Manbij is on the road from the border to Daesh’s de facto capital, Raqqa, this triumph will deprive them of an important supply route.
