For the Record: U2 Release Free Album on iTunes

Everyone’s looking for new ways to distribute their music to the biggest number of people, and so far U2 are winning. Their surprise album Songs of Innocence was announced, released and automatically downloaded to all Apple fans during last week’s Apple event in which the new iPhone 6 and Apple Watch were launched… so if you’re an iTunes user, that album is already in your library whether you like it or not. There’s been some internet backlash from the cynics, but it’s a U2 album and it’s free, so personally I like it.

  • Meanwhile, my inner teenager is rejoicing because Bush finally has some new music out. New single “The Only Way Out” may be a little more easy listening compared to their signature sound, but that voice hasn’t changed a bit:

  • On the other hand, Jack White‘s voice may be something of an acquired taste, but he is pretty much a modern day musical genius. Check out new Lazaretto single “Would You Fight For My Love?”:

  • And here’s a dose of all-round Americana with dirty guitars with “From Now On”, Delta Spirit‘s first single from their brand new album Into the Wide:

  • Roger Waters‘s The Wall film premiered last week at the Toronto International Film Festival, but unfortunately still does not have an official release date. The half-documentary, half-concert film uses footage from several different concerts from Waters‘s The Wall tour, which kicked off in Toronto in 2010.

  • Weirdly, Fall Out Boy‘s new one “Centuries” features a sample of Suzanne Vega’s hit “Tom’s Diner”:

  • And even more weirdly, Miley Cyrus is now covering Led Zeppelin tracks. Her take on “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” doesn’t have the greatest sound quality, but she gets points for song choice and belting ability:

  • And Calvin Harris follows up his string of amazing dance tracks (except “Summer” – that one kind of sucked) with new John Newman-assisted “Blame”:
