Throughout history, Egypt has garnered a reputation for its vibrant belly dancing and cabaret culture, which has experienced a decline in recent decades, making way for Western-style nightclubs and bars. Nevertheless, traces of this cherished Egyptian heritage persist, concealed within the labyrinthine alleyways and thoroughfares of Cairo and Alexandria, the nation’s two major cities.

Here, we present a selection of the oldest, still-operating cabarets in Cairo and Alexandria, as well as some newer establishments that pay homage to the forgotten cabaret way of life.

Miami, Cairo

One of the oldest cabarets in all of Egypt, Miami has withstood the test of time. The stage has witnessed the Egyptian Queen of belly-dancing Samia Gamal who used to perform with fellow superstar Tahya, Karioka, and has seen Egyptian legend, Farid Al-Atrash, pour his heart out.

Palmyra, Cairo

Venturing into Palmyra guarantees an enchanting odyssey, with half-naked Pharaonic murals adorning the stage. This unabashed cabaret, situated Downtown, boasts a reputation for hosting the finest belly dancers in the city. Nestled within Scarabee Alley, just off 26th July Street, Palmyra invites patrons to immerse themselves in an unforgettable experience.

Sherazade, Cairo

While technically categorized as a bar/cabaret, Sherazade has graced the corner of Alfy Street for over half a century. Inside, this bustling cabaret reveals walls adorned with depictions of belly dancers and Arabian princes astride gallant horses, while colorful lights dangle from above. Its flamboyant and somewhat risqué ambiance seamlessly coalesces into a truly captivating spectacle.

Steigenberger’s Monty’s Bar, Alexandria

Located at Cecil Hotel in the heart of Alexandria, Monty’s Bar is named after British Field Marshall, Bernard Montgomery, who fought in both World Wars and visited the hotel at one point in his life. Each day from 6 pm to 2 pm, you will find high-quality live entertainment shows and an exquisite list of spirits to order from.

Previously owned by singer and performer Sherifa Fadel, the establishment even inspired a famous melody entitled “El Leil, El Leil, E Leil,” composed by Fadel herself. Once a popular gathering spot for esteemed singers and mesmerizing belly dancers, Casino El Leil continues to stand as a testament to its legacy.
