Egypt has added four more universities to its presence in the 2027 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, bringing the total to 40 institutions this year.
With universities from 118 countries included, the latest edition offers another look at how Egypt’s higher education scene is showing up on the global stage.
How Egypt’s University Presence Has Grown
Egypt’s presence in the ranking has been growing steadily over the years, going from just three universities in 2016 to eight in 2017, 19 in 2019, and 28 in 2024.
The number then climbed to 35 in 2025, 36 in 2026, and now 40 in 2027, marking the country’s largest representation in the ranking so far.

Other Egyptian Universities Making the List
Beyond the top 1,000, several other Egyptian institutions secured places across the ranking’s remaining categories.
Ain Shams University landed in the 1001–1200 band, while Beni Suef University appeared in the 1201–1400 category.
Meanwhile, the British University in Egypt and Zewail City of Science and Technology both ranked in the 1401–1600 band.
Pharos University also made its debut in the ranking, appearing in the 1601–1800 category.

How the Ranking Works
THE evaluates universities through 18 indicators across five main areas, looking beyond academics to consider research, international connections, and industry impact.
Research quality accounts for 30% of the score, followed by the teaching environment at 29.5% and research environment at 29%. International outlook makes up 7.5%, while industry engagement accounts for the remaining 4%.
In other words, it’s not just about what happens in the classroom, but also how universities contribute to research, innovation, and the wider academic community.

A Bigger Presence, Year After Year
With 40 universities now included, Egypt’s representation has come a long way since its first appearance in 2016. The latest results reflect that continued expansion, with Egyptian institutions appearing across multiple ranking categories worldwide.
