Saudi Authorities Shut Down Nightclub on Opening Night in Jeddah

The internet had a blast creating memes when news came out that Lebanon and Dubai-based nightclub, White, was coming to Jeddah.

The supposedly halal version of White was scheduled to open last Thursday with R’n’B superstar Ne-Yo headlining the night. With a smart-casual dress code, tickets were priced between 500 to 1,000 Saudi Riyals.

Yet, the hashtag #DiscoInJeddah was not the strangest thing to take place. The highly-anticipated lounge was shut down on its opening night.

The opening of the alcohol-free nightclub was halted as authorities claimed it violated legal proceedings. The country’s General Entertainment Authority (GEA) tweeted that the event had not been licensed and described it as a violation.

The statement added that a license was issued for another event, but its contractor took advantage of an extension of that license to host what was meant to be the venue’s inaugural event.

American singer/songwriter, Ne-Yo took to social media to apologize to his fans, adding that he was already on his way to the venue.
